Raman Zaya, who grew up in Tehran, became politically active after the 1979 revolution. The establishment of a rigid Islamic Revolutionary Guard during his school years inspired him to campaign for liberal democracy. In 1985, Zaya fled overland to Turkey and on to West Berlin. His asylum case was heard for three years in Amberg under sheltered conditions.
His experiences with integration processes, resistance and the search for identity in the new society formed the basis for his performance on the relationship between guest and host, "träumen auf deutsch ohne untertitel", which was awarded a prize by the Antonio Amadeu Foundation in 2017. Other works on the subject, such as "kranker Körper Orient" on the relationship between home and the new homeland, reached the public as early as 2006 at the Munich Kammerspiele.
From 1992 to 2000, Zaya studied film and philosophy at the Johan Gutenberg University in Mainz. Here he developed the university model project "Filmic Documentation, Interview, Reportage", which later grew into a practice-oriented academy. His encounters with filmmakers such as Thomas Schadt and Andreas Dresen shaped his later work. In 2014, Zaya installed a room called "Table of contents" at the Frankfurter Kunstverein for the international group exhibition "Death is your body". In four different lecture performances, he negotiated real and possible future transformations of the dead body into usable objects that promise continued life and immortality in various ways.
Crossing the boundaries of presentation and representation, the documentary versus the playful, culminated in the encounter with Helena Waldmann and her production "feierabend!", at the Sophiensaele in Berlin in 2008, in which the boundaries between spectator and player were also playfully dissolved.
Zaya's interdisciplinary works often explore the relationship to form and boundaries. During the pandemic, these explorations led to projects such as "Dialog erwünscht", 2021 and "Gesellschaft für Glückmachende Angelegenheiten", 2023.
Zaya is currently also investigating the design of a micro-protest action in public space. The planning is based on his research as part of the project "Schöner Widerstand! New art-protest strategies."

Raman Zaya, aufgewachsen in Teheran, begann sich nach der Revolution von 1979 politisch zu engagieren. Die Etablierung einer rigiden islamischen Revolutionsgarde in seiner Schulzeit stiftete ihn an, sich für die freiheitliche Demokratie einzusetzen. 1985 floh Zaya über den Landweg in die Türkei und weiter nach Westberlin. Sein Asylverfahren wurde drei Jahre in Amberg unter Heimbedingungen verhandelt.
Die Erfahrungen mit Integrationsprozessen, Widerständen und die Suche nach Identität in der neuen Gesellschaft bildeten eine Grundlage für seine 2017 von der Antonio Amadeu Stiftung preisgekrönten Performance zum Verhältnis von Gast und Gastgeber: „träumen auf deutsch ohne untertitel". Andere Arbeiten zum Thema wie "kranker Körper Orient" zu der Beziehung von Heimat in der neuen Heimat, Regie regina Wenig, erreichten den Münchener Kammerspiele schon 2006 die Öffentlichkeit.
Von 1992 bis 2000 studierte Zaya interdisziplinäre Geisteswissenschaften mit Fokus auf Film und Philosophie an der Johan-Gutenberg-Universität Mainz. Hier entwickelte er das universitäre Modellprojekt "Filmische Dokumentation, Interview, Reportage" mit, das später zu einer praxisorientierten Akademie heranwuchs. Die Begegnungen mit Filmemachern wie Thomas Schadt oder Andreas Dresen prägten seine späteren Arbeiten. 2014 installierte Zaya zur internationalen Gruppenausstellung "Der Tod ist Dein Körper" einen Raum namens "Table of contents" im Frankfurter Kunstverein. In vier unterschiedlichen Lecture Performances verhandelte er reale und mögliche zukünftige Transformationen des toten Körpers in verwendbare Objekte, die auf verschiedene Weise ein Weiterleben und Unsterblichkeit versprechen.
Das Überschreiten von Grenzen der Präsentation und Repräsentation, das Dokumentarische versus das Spielerische, gipfelte in der Begegnung mit Helena Waldmann und ihrer Produktion „feierabend!- das gegengift“, in den Berliner Sophiensaälen 2008, in der sich auch die Grenzen zwischen Zuschauer und Spieler spielerisch aufhoben.
Zayas interdisziplinäre Arbeiten erkunden oft das Verhältnis zu Form und Grenze. Während der Pandemie führten diese Erkundungen zu Projekten wie „Dialog erwünscht", 2021 und "Gesellschaft für Glückmachende Angelegenheiten", 2023.
Aktuell untersucht Zaya auch die Gestaltung einer Mikroprotestaktion im öffentlichen Raum. Die Planung basiert auf seiner Forschung im Rahmen des Projekts "Schöner Widerstand! Neue Kunst-Protest-Strategien.
